New RedLaTIF website

The Latin American Forest Fire Remote Sensing Network, a regional GOFC-GOLD Fire network, has redesigned its website. The website contains updated information on network participants, projects and related events.

New Indonesian fire project funded by AusAid

The project is a 12 month collaborative effort between the Indonesian Ministries of Forestry and Environment and the Department of Land Information’s Satellite Remote Sensing Services in Western Australia to develop capacity for the use of fire hot spot information.

BIRD satellite observes progression of fires in British Columbia

The Bi-spectral Infrared Detection satellite has recently observed fire complexes in British Columbia over three consecutive nights. Imagery from these observations is shown in this PowerPoint presentation. This study demonstrates the excellent regional overview capabilities of the BIRD satellite.

Expert Meeting for Southern African Countries

Satellite Applications Centre/CSIR is hosting an Expert Meeting on "Low to Medium Resolution Satellite Sensors and Disaster Monitoring" on the 5th and 6th of June in Pretoria, South Africa. It will be a closed meeting bringing together representatives from 25 institutions that are developing or are interested in developing projects in the area of space technology and disaster management. Space Technology and Disaster Management Workshop

The next workshop on space technology and disaster management, organized by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, will be for the European region and will be held in Romania from 19-23 May 2003. Fire danger products over Southeast Asia are available

The products are results from the Southeast Asia Fire Danger Rating System Project, a 5.5 year Canadian International Development Agency initiative. The project is executed by the Canadian Forest Service with partner agencies in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and at the ASEAN level. GLOBSCAR products are available

GLOBSCAR products (global burnt areas in 2000 using ATSR-2) are now available for the user community. The dataset can be found at the VITO (Flemish Institute for Technological Research) Geosuccess website at http://www.geosuccess.net under the burn scar detection section.

Fire-related sessions at EGS-AGU-EUG Joint Assembly in April 2003

The program of this event, held jointly by the European Geophysical Society, the American Geophysical Union and the European Union of Geosciences, includes several sessions with relevance to fires. The final version of the Global Burnt Area 2000 inventory is available

The final version of the Global Burnt Area-2000 map (GBA20000) has been released. This version includes reprocessed data over several regions based on user comments. Documentation on qualitative evaluation and algorithms are also found on the product's website at http://www.gvm.jrc.it/fire/gba2000/index.htm.

Beta version of the Global Burnt Area-2000 product available

The beta version of the Global Burnt Area-2000 map (GBA20000) is now available for review and comments. This product is an inventory of the areas burnt during the year 2000, as derived from the 1 km resolution SPOT VEGETATION satellite imagery. MSG-1 launched

The first satellite of the geostationary Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) series was successfully launched on August 28, 2002. The SEVIRI instrument on board MSG will allow active fire monitoring at high temporal frequency. Read about MSG and the launch at http://www.eumetsat.de/en/index.html.

NOAA-M launched

The newest member of the polar orbiter NOAA series has been launched onto a 10:00 am sun-synchronous orbit on June 24, 2002. The satellite carries the six-channel AVHRR with the switchable channel 3A/3B (1.6/3.7 micron). Channel 3B provides the capability of daytime active fire detection. NOAA-16/AVHRR channel 3B turned on during the daytime over Colorado, USA

The usual operating schedule of the switchable AVHRR channel 3A/3B (1.6/3.7 micron) on board NOAA-16, the currently operational "afternoon" NOAA satellite, is to turn 3A on for daytime and 3B for nighttime. Due to the unprecedented wildfires in the state of Colorado, USA, in support of the fire monitoring and suppression activities, channel 3B will be turned on over the region for the next two weeks. Special session on fire-related studies at the Spring 2002 meeting of the American Geophysical Union

This special session was devoted to a wide range of fire-related studies including remote and in situ observation of all fire attributes (hot spots, burned scars, and smoke particulate and gas emissions) and applications of the observations in understanding fire impact on, and interaction with, weather, climate, environment and ecosystem; modeling fire spread and smoke transportation; as well as policy issues related to wildfire management. AQUA satellite launched

On May 4, 2002 the second satellite of the Earth Observing System (EOS) series was launched onto an afternoon sun-synchronous orbit. On board Aqua is the second MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) instrument, which provides global, medium-resolution near-real time measurements useful for fire mapping. SPOT5 successfully launched

ENVISAT-1 satellite launched

On February 28, 2002, the Envisat-1 satellite was successfully launched by the European Space Agency. On board the satellite is the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer, which has 15 programmable channels to measure the reflected solar radiation in the VIS and NIR spectral region at 300 m resolution. Potential applications include burned area mapping. FMI visit http://envisat.esa.int.

BIRD satellite launched

The Bi-spectral Infrared Detection satellite, carrying the two-channel infrared Hot Spot Recognition Sensor system (HSRS) and the Wide-Angle Optoelectronic Stereo Scanner (WAOSS-B) was launched on October 22, 2001. HSRS, which is dedicated to fire detection and analysis, provides MIR and TIR meaurements at 370 m resolution. FMI visit http://spacesensors.dlr.de/SE/bird/index.shtml.
